Few car brands stir the soul quite like Alfa Romeo. Founded in Milan in 1910 as A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), this iconic Italian marque has spent over a century blending breathtaking design with pure driving passion. The Alfa Romeo car brand is synonymous with racing heritage, having won consecutive Formula 1 World Championships in 1950 and 1951 with Juan Manuel Fangio and Nino Farina behind the wheel. The Alfa Romeo logo — known as the Biscione — is one of the most storied car logos in automotive history. The badge features the red cross of Milan on the left and a serpent devouring a man (or Moor) on the right, drawn from the coat of arms of the Visconti family. It has adorned Alfa's grille since 1910, making it a living symbol of Milanese heritage. Today, Alfa Romeo operates under the Stellantis umbrella, producing emotionally charged vehicles like the Giulia and Stelvio that balance Italian flair with modern engineering. The brand remains a benchmark for drivers who prioritize feel and character over mere horsepower figures.

2015Current
Alfa Romeo redesigned its badge to coincide with the brand's global relaunch under FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne, who committed to the 5-year plan reintroducing Alfa as a standalone premium marque with the 2015 Giulia sedan targeting BMW directly in international markets.
Design Notes
The shield-shaped emblem sharpened the traditional elements into a three-dimensional, jewel-like form with a deep Italian red, chrome surround, and laser-precision detailing on the Visconti serpent, abandoning the circular format to signal a distinct departure toward premium positioning.

1982
Under continued state ownership by IRI-Finmeccanica, Alfa Romeo updated its badge to accompany the launch of the Alfa 33 platform era and ongoing efforts to modernize the brand ahead of the eventual 1986 acquisition by Fiat, which was already being negotiated behind the scenes.
Design Notes
The circular emblem retained both the Milanese cross and Visconti serpent but introduced a deeper, more saturated red and chrome-style border, with bolder sans-serif lettering for 'ALFA ROMEO' and a refined metallic finish replacing the flatter enamel appearance of earlier versions.

1920
The emblem was formalized in 1920, drawing directly from the coat of arms of Milan, where ALFA was founded in 1910. The red cross honors the city of Milan, while the Visconti serpent devouring a man comes from the ancient ruling Visconti dynasty's heraldry, rooting the brand in Milanese civic identity.
Design Notes
A circular badge divided into two halves: the left showing a red cross on white (Milan's flag), the right displaying the Visconti biscione serpent in blue, framed by the brand name in red lettering on a white ring with decorative knotwork dividers.
